A dreamlike orb suspended in space, Antlered Giraffe Hnöttur is alive with surreal beauty. At its crown stands a giraffe unlike any other crowned with antlers and adorned with delicate plumes, it gazes outward beneath a canopy of palms. Its reflection appears below, as if a mirrored realm turns silently beneath.

An empty chiesa explodes with colour in this post-anthrocene imagining of beautiful Venezia. Unabashed by human threat, a myriad of elusive beasts embroider every crack and crevice of this ancient building, startling in their incongruous inhabitance. A plethora of pythons command the columns, while an over-sized heron peers from the sanctified entrance. Rarity and surprise are commonplace here... the collective presence of normally solitary snakes, enlarged lizards and contented frogs, sitting throne-like on voluminous lily pads. But this is not a formidable scene; these amphibious, reptilian and insect species are evolving as a tribe, the realised space, freedom and safety of this place enables them to thrive and grow. Swollen fruits and burgeoning blooms hang heavy from laden boughs, and take on the heady, sultry scent of late summer. A spectrum of greens from pine and emerald to mint and lime contrast with the crimson of over-ripe berry clusters. Seasonal treats of ice cream cones and sundaes grow from the branches, the heat of the sun mitigated by protective parasols. Tiny fronds of coral remind us that the sea in these climates is never far away. Canary yellows are mirrored in pocket-watch sunflowers and ripened citrus that lend their tangy flesh to an array of celebratory summer cocktails.

Spent leaves change to rust and russett, the colours of fire and earth. A wind encircles, threatening to detach the last of the fronds from their homely stays. Giant maple and angel’s trumpets stage their last before making way for the cankerous nuts and seed heads of the new season. A walk in the woods, harvesting mushrooms and chestnuts; each crunching step a warning to hidden fawns and a signal to send squirrels scurrying into protective branches. These are the sights and flavours of autumn, as predictable as the turning leaves that rise and fall in the cooling air.
