The Bird Forest - Original 2019

The story behind the artwork

This exquisite 3D encapsulation of a tropical forest is designed to whisk you away from the urbane, and onto a path that leads your mind's eye deep into the jungle. Originally shown in an exhibition in Paul Smith’s flagship Albemarle Street in Central London, it offers a unique window on a place unsullied by the footprints of humankind.

Nature in its most pristine form is at the heart of this piece, and every individual flower has been chosen and delicately positioned; indigo swinging bellflowers, poker hot pink and orange bromeliads, flushed peach tiger lilies, crimson hibiscus, white variegated orchids, clivia, jasmine and angels' trumpets. The leaves are organically arranged in support; green, red or blue cordyline, shell ginger leaves and palmetto fans.  Myriad butterflies flit, pollinating as they go.  From deep in the undergrowth, the eyes of a soulful crane, an iridescent kingfisher, a flaunting peacock and crested parrots look out, unseeing or in warning.  And all the while, the scene fades out to a black panther, head turned in the direction of an obscure unknown and it is along this path that the kaleidoscope of colours and our own curiosity will follow…
