The story behind the artwork
Inspired by Penhaligon’s The Who’s Of London; Duchess Rose and her quietly devoted husband, the Duke, find themselves at the centre of a city that never quite stands still. Around them, East London is a world in the making: lively, ever-changing and filled with the sights, sounds and scents of everyday enchantment.
Golden bells ring out from the north, while lemons take flight above the streets, bringing a burst of freshness to the air. The scent of roses, orchids, irises and hydrangeas drifts between the flower stalls, mingling with freshly baked cake and the comforting aroma of tea, brewed and waiting to be poured.
Familiar faces bring their own particular charm to the scene. Clara the peacock stands proudly to the left, Beauregard balances atop a precarious pile of suitcases, and the ever-serious Dorothea surveys the younger generation from her lofty perch on a cake.
Yet beneath this lively gathering lies another story: the history of the neighbourhood itself. From the Truman chimney and the old brewery at Brick Lane to the bustling fish market at Billingsgate, the teapots, barrels, flowers and curious creatures scattered throughout the composition offer glimpses of London's working past.
Here, history and imagination meet in a wonderfully crowded world, where every object has a story, every character has somewhere to be, and the city is always becoming something new.
