The story behind the artwork
An original artwork in Kristjana’s Navigator’s Map series, An Ode to Art: Discoveries of the World is designed upon a navigational map that once guided 16th-century travellers. The composition celebrates the pivotal art movements that shaped the history of painting, from the gothic and romanesque traditions of the Medieval period to the dreamlike ambiguity of Surrealism, each represented through the hero animals plotted across the continents.
A white unicorn evokes Medieval myth and chivalry, while Renaissance allegory appears through an ermine adorned with jewels and headdress, referencing Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine. A regal man-lion conjures the power of Baroque monarchs, and Dali-esque elephants stretch dreamlike on spindly legs, embodying the spirit of Surrealism.
The tools of the artist travel across flower-carpeted lands on butterflies, trains, and boats, carried from age to age. Botanical details pay homage to art’s great masters, from Monet’s violet skies and waterlilies to the sunflowers and iris beloved by artists such as Van Gogh and Georgia O’Keeffe. Meticulously layered and hand-finished, this sculptural collage is a one-of-a-kind artwork from which the popular print was created.
