The story behind the artwork

Some maps attempt to define the world; others reveal how little can be held still. The White World belongs to the latter.

Across its shifting surface, two polar bears move with quiet purpose. They are not placed upon the map, but seem to exist beyond it—travellers or perhaps guardians, following routes older than the lines that try to contain them. Around them, continents appear delicate, almost provisional, as if shaped as much by memory as by observation.

The whiteness is not absence but accumulation—of time, of silence, of landscapes slowly altering. Details emerge and recede, suggesting a world both recorded and in flux.

In this space, cartography offers structure, yet the bears remind us of something less certain: that the world, however carefully drawn, is never entirely fixed.

Artwork Details

Bespoke Hand and laser cut paper collage. Digitally designed, hand sculpted paper elements are painstakingly pinned in place onto a thick foam board, creating a stunning three dimensional effect.
