The story behind the artwork

For all of its immediate, exotic appeal, this animated 3D art piece portrays a world teetering on the brink of metamorphosis, reflected in the art spilling dramatically over a precarious ledge that many of these creatures and life-forms filling its organic borders are balanced upon.  This ‘Vin’, this shelter from the elements, holds the animals fast against a tumultuous storm, offering a pathway unseen towards a new and heroic evolving species...  Meanwhile, the flora brims, chirps, chimes, with neon vitality; colours inspired by the spice-infused orange of the Monarch butterfly and the popping pink of the fecund lily.  Tropical foliage entwines with a dazzling array of flowers - clivia, calla lilies and frangipane - breathing expectant life into this jungle oasis.

Kristjana’s characteristic, majestic beasts move into the frame; a flamed-coloured tiger takes centre stage, while jewel encrusted Asian elephants stand their ground.  A sloth unfurls, a polar bear turns, a panda crouches low.  The regal lion looks out, while a peacock struts, mid-display.  All stand proudly, their monochromatic colours contrasting sharply with the rainbow hues all around, a parallel to the black and white Iceland of Kristjana’s childhood.

The mighty grimace of a mountain gorilla epitomises hope and strength.  Their resplendent eye and headdresses are not cowed.  They are not hope lost.  Rather they hint at the possibility of an alternative path of extraordinary evolution; animals overcoming the ills of humanity and leaping beyond the crevice into a triumphant new world order.

Digitally designed, hand sculpted paper elements are painstakingly pinned in place onto a thick foam board, creating a stunning three dimensional effect. Utterly unique in its composition and to its owner, an original artwork is one of its kind and cannot be replicated.  Your piece will be the only piece like it, anywhere in the world.
