The story behind the artwork
Spanning over two meters in length, this panoramic Limited Edition print is based upon a captivating mid-nineteenth century painting, and depicts the earth’s flora and fauna in one continual illustration through its various climates, from the hot tropical islands of East Asia, India and Africa to the moderate climate of Western Europe, then all the way to Russia and the frigid Arctic. Depicting the equinoctial angles of the sun's rays, it shows the impact of light and heat on animal and plant life, and how they thrive in varying environments.
Kristjana’s artwork is meticulously detailed with animals, many elevated into surreal versions of themselves, bedecked with extravagant headpieces or morphed with their winged or four legged counterparts. Spot flamingo, giraffe, polar bears and lemurs alongside flying fish, penguins, cats and owls. Meteorological elements, such as the rising sun and the full moon radiate upon the natural world below, and the ethereal aurora borealis hovers over the Arctic Circle. Mountains, volcanos and icy glaciers sit alongside a myriad of vegetation, including towering palms, forest pines and tropical orchid.
