The story behind the artwork

Inspired by Caroll’s imperious Queen of Hearts and her guards, the humanoid playing cards, Kristjana has turned the joyful ‘heart’ into a tree, abundant with red and white roses. Spot tiny motifs of Alice’s world within the laden boughs; leggy flamingos leave their game of croquet to scale the branches, the ever ticking clocks and depictions of afternoon tea. The genial Cheshire Cat watches over walking playing cards, which falter along blindly in this world where things are never what they seem…
