The story behind the artwork
A fantastical map of Iceland, framed by blooming flora and fauna, where volcanic moths drift across the sky and whale skeletons swim above people’s homes. The stories it tells are real, yet their depiction is surreal - blending Icelandic history, nature, folklore, and imagination into a map that traces sensations and memories rather than names and facts.
In the south-west, magnifying glasses draw the eye into the story of the Brúðarbúningur: the women who wore it, the weddings it witnessed, and the remarkable journey it undertook through Icelandic history. Below, waves crash against green moss as foreign travellers arrive on Iceland’s shores. In the north, cherubs carry silver pieces, transforming religious objects into fashionable jewellery.
