The story behind the artwork
As twilight settles over the island of Sri Lanka, Næturblóm – Navy Ceylon reveals a different side of this extraordinary landscape. Deep navy skies replace the warmth of dusk, inviting the viewer into a world that awakens after sunset, where moonlight uncovers hidden beauty and every shadow tells a story.
Known historically as Ceylon, the island rests peacefully at the southern tip of India, shaped by centuries of maritime exploration, ancient Buddhist traditions, and a rich cultural heritage influenced by Portuguese, Dutch, British and Indian histories. As darkness falls, the island transforms into a place of quiet mystery, where tropical forests and sacred temples seem suspended in time beneath a canopy of stars.
At its heart, the charismatic yet endangered Sri Lankan leopard watches silently from the darkness—ever graceful, alert and elusive. Native satinwood, acacia and sweeping palm fronds emerge from the night, woven together with luminous orchids, passion flowers, frangipani and sacred lotus, their pale blooms glowing against the deep blue landscape like flowers that belong only to the night.
A majestic pair of richly adorned elephants stand beneath the moonlit sky, symbols of resilience despite the threats they continue to face from habitat loss and human greed. Bathed in soft nocturnal light, they embody the enduring spirit of an island where nature, history and imagination continue to flourish long after the sun has disappeared beyond the horizon.
