The story behind the artwork
A playful and very British celebration of the ubiquitous Afternoon Tea, drawing on Kristjana's work with some icons of English life. William Fortnum built his empire on the sale of wax collected from the Royal household, and a pair of candles light the layers of this 'Tower of Tea', its structure reminiscent of Kristjana's artwork designs for the V&A museum, but with the myriad colours favoured by designer Paul Smith. Delicious treats are hidden within; cakes, cutlery and fancy teapots, such as those enjoyed by guests at Brown's Hotel. Orange blossom and Rose hip hang, ready to be steeped in a swirl of teacups. Tiny creatures convey the narrative; a lemon-bodied bee, kingfisher, minute fish and Kristjana's trademark evolutionary beasts, adorned with antlers.
