The story behind the artwork

Inspired by Caroll’s imperious Queen of Hearts and her guards, the humanoid playing cards, Kristjana has turned the hardworking ‘club’ into a bounteous tree. Spot tiny motifs of Alice’s world within the laden boughs; the giant caterpillar suggests imminent transformation and the magic-inducing mushrooms invoke a sense of the unfamiliar and surreal. One brightly hued bird is metamorphosed into the Mad Hatter, another into the boundlessly energetic March Hare. Things are seldom what they seem…
