For many years Kristjana has collected books on Japanese woodcuts and silk printing. Everything about the method and style appeals to the artist, from the graceful, graphical sensibilities and the little personal features and moods that they evoke. The intricacy of the carving in these traditional pieces is considered a miracle of sculpture, and in Kristjana's eyes, no one does landscapes better than the traditional Japanese woodcutters.
In 1853, four American ships steamed into the harbour of Uraga and forced Japan to open up their ancient and fiercely protected country to the rigours of international trade with detested foreigners. After an internal struggle, the Japanese felt they had no choice but to adopt Western technology in order to compete, so traditional woodcutting and silk printing was replaced by newer Western methods.
The Yellow Mountain is part of the Japanese Woodcut Exploration, a series of Kristjana's Japanese landscape studies. To make these stunning pieces of art, Kristjana created a unique collage, combining her re-worked Japanese woodcut mountains with traditional Victorian engravings.

Bespoke hand and laser cut paper collage. Digitally designed, hand-sculpted paper elements are painstakingly pinned in place onto a thick foam board, creating a stunning three dimensional effect. Utterly unique in its composition and to its owner, an original artwork is one of its kind and cannot be replicated. Your piece will be the only piece like it, anywhere in the world.
