The story behind the artwork
This dramatic 3D sculpture was created for a group exhibition in Paul Smith’s flagship Albemarle Street store in 2019. Inspired by her work for the V&A’s Frida Kahlo exhibition, Kristjana chose an azure blue box, modeled out of the facade of Kahlo’s ‘La Casa Azul’ (The Blue House), as the home for this fascinating skull, meticulously overlaid with flawless, vivid butterfly wings. The outlines of the wings, fanned against the rise and fall of the skull, represent the interplay between life, death and beauty. As in the deep rooted Mexican traditions that inspire this piece, death is being celebrated as a natural part of the life cycle.
Frida Kahlo and her home are further inspirations for this piece. Overwhelming positivity in the face of adversity - her battles with polio, a spinal injury and a tumultuous marriage - empowered Frida to seek solace in her magical yet realist art. Painting from a wheelchair facing into a mirror, Frida explored the dualism of the real and the surreal. In La Caza Azul she filled the rooms with personal, beloved objects to create a joyous, private universe. Kristjana pays homage to the flowers Frida wore in her hair and in her paintings by training them evocatively around the sides of the box. The resulting 3D art piece is visually stunning and intentionally thought-provoking, encouraging the viewer to adopt a more positive attitude towards death.
